I used to toss and turn all night… wake up and walk like a zombie…
Had horrible brain fog…
Felt like I needed a nap throughout the day, but had a hard time falling and staying asleep through the night…
I didn’t know it at the time, but my vitamin D was low at 22 ng/dL…
… and when I started raising my vitamin D levels, my sleep started to improve…
Now, a common thing I hear is “I am already taking a vitamin D supplement… but my sleep isn’t improving?”
Well that’s because most people take vitamin D supplements that measure the strength of the vitamin D in IU’s (somewhere between 3,000 and 50,000 IU’s!!)
… which is crazy high and not a good way to raise your vitamin D…
Ask yourself… how are vitamins made?
It’s not by taking supplements…
Our bodies were not designed to survive off of supplements…
Real vitamins come from what I call “real food”…
… and they are made through the fermentation process…
This was my big epiphany as a beer brewer…
… when I understood that the same probiotics that digest food and make vitamins in our gut are the same probiotics that we use to ferment foods and beverages like beer, wine, kombucha, sauerkraut, sourdough, etc.
It makes sense why these fermented foods and beverages are full of vitamins, digestive enzymes and well… probiotics…
That’s the natural way I choose to level up my vitamin intake…
I work with people who are taking all kinds of vitamin supplements and usually have a lot of toxicity from these supplements which is why I personally only use food to optimize my microbiome to get more energy and sleep better…
Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin which you’ll find in foods rich in healthy fat like raw milk, cod liver oil, and other sources…
… but getting vitamin D from food isn’t as easy as eating the food…
You have to be able to digest the food and have the probiotics in your gut to make vitamin D…
… and if you are low in vitamin D, then chances are you have poor gut health… and if you have poor health, then your microbiome is likely going to struggle to turn food into vitamins…
Not to mention, with poor gut health you probably can’t tolerate some of these foods like dairy…
This is why optimizing your microbiome requires more than just changing your diet…
You need to understand what type of bacteria lives in your gut… both good and bad…
This is what helped me understand my gut issues and it made sense why I had a hard time digesting food, and why I started developing food allergies and sensitivities…
… why I would get gas, bloating and constipation…
Because I was lacking good gut flora and had bad gut flora…
… and I needed to restructure my gut flora to improve digestion and be able to get these nutrients…
This is what I call optimizing your microbiome…
Some of this may not make sense right now, but as you move through this email series I’ll help you connect the dots so you can see the bigger picture…
To raise your vitamin D levels you must understand why it’s important to work on proper hydration to improve digestion… but there’s more to hydration…
A big reason for proper hydration is because one requisite to raise your vitamin D is that you need to be hydrated…
