When you eat food and 30 minutes later feel like you desperately need a nap, it’s time to replace your meals…
This smoothie recipe is something I started doing because I was experiencing a lot of inflammation, was gaining weight and felt drowsy after eating…
This smoothie is a good smoothie to help transition into a ketogenic diet…
Sugar is a short term quick burning fuel…
Healthy fat is premium fuel that will give you sustained energy throughout the day…
Here’s what you’ll need…
Coconut Lemon Cooler
Ingredients
- 1 Organic Cucumber
- 1 Organic Avocado
- 2 Tbsp centrifuged coconut oil
- 1/4 cup wild frozen blueberries
- 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
- 1 cup chopped cilantro
- 1 lemon
- 1 lime
- 1/2″ of ginger
- 1 cup 100% coconut water (wild harvest or harmless harvest are the best)
*I used to use C2O coconut water, but they’ve started adding sugar… bummer… they used to be good…
Here’s a couple tips on making this smoothie…
#1 Cucumbers
Peel the cucumber…
Healthy fats are best digested in a low to no fermentable carbohydrate environment…
Removing the peel makes this smoothie easier to digest…
#2 Avocado
Choosing the right avocado can make or break this recipe…
It’s common for avocados to be picked before they are fully ripe… they are often green and hard when you press on it.
Avocados should be slightly soft to press which tells you they are ripe and oily…
Not only do avocados provide good healthy fats, but are also a good source of vitamins E & K which go hand in hand with vitamins A and D…
#3 Centrifuged coconut oil & wild blueberries
By far one of my favorite sources of healthy fat is coconut oil…
Not all coconut oil is created equal… I get centrifuged coconut oil…
Yes it costs more but your health is totally worth it!
For this recipe I use wild frozen blueberries… no need to thaw them…
These blueberries are high in antioxidants and give this smoothie a good tangy flavor…
#4 Turmeric
One of the main reasons why I started with this smoothie was to reduce inflammation…
Usually breakfast meals are either carb heavy (oatmeal, toast, cereal, etc.), or protein heavy (eggs, ham, bacon, etc.)
I had a hard time digesting protein and undigested protein in the body is one of the main sources of inflammation…
Yeast overgrowth from carb heavy meals is another big source of inflammation…
With this smoothie, you eliminate both sugar and protein… and turmeric is well known for its anti-inflammatory benefits…
#5 Cilantro
One of the things I found was affecting my gut flora was heavy metals…
The reason why I included cilantro in this recipe is because it is known to be used for heavy metal detox…
Heavy metals is what creates an environment for things like mold, yeast overgrowth and other bad bacteria to colonize in your gut…
This is what makes this smoothie a good daily detox drink…
#6 Lemons & Limes
Lemons and limes are not only good for detoxing, but also great for hydration… between the cucumber, coconut water and these citrus you’ll be well hydrated throughout the day…
Sometimes I add an extra lemon… if you like tart, then try adding more lemon…
#7 Ginger
Ginger is one of my favorite roots to detox and juice…
There is something about combining lemon and ginger that creates an amazing flavor… combined with cucumber, this is what makes this drink quite refreshing…
You take all of these ingredients, top it off with coconut water and blend to make 1 quart…
How To Drink a Ketogenic Smoothie
This smoothie that can give you fuel and energy for hours…
… but only if you drink it the right way…
What’s the wrong way?
If you just slam it down and gulp it right away, you’ll be skipping the most important part of nourishing the body which is digestion…
Good digestion starts in your mouth…
When you put food in your mouth, you release saliva which has digestive enzymes… this is what begins the process of digestion…
Most people are living “busy lives” and in such a hurry that they’ve forgotten how to properly eat…
Ever see a cow munching away on grass just eating not caring about anything else going on in the world?
Well, that’s the approach you want to take when drinking this smoothie…
Take a sip and hold it in your mouth…
Feel the coconut oil dissolve…
Feel the smoothie go from a “thick” consistency into a “thin”, liquid-like consistency…
… and trust me, if you’re not used to it, it’ll be hard…
You’ll want to drink and gulp right away…
If you drink it too fast, you won’t get nourishment and you’ll overload your digestive system which can actually give you the opposite effect and make you feel tired…
If you take your time, and digest the fats and sugars from the blueberries, you’ll be giving your body an easy to digest healthy fat fuel that will give you energy…
It should take you 1-2 hours to drink this minimum…
I sometimes do intermittent fasting and start drinking this around noon and can go all the way up until dinner before I have my meal of the day…
So there you have it…
Enjoy your Coconut Lemon Cooler…
