Fasting is a tool used to “force” the body into a state of ketosis… a state of ketosis is when your body is instructed to “crack open” its fat cells to seek nutrients…
What happens if you don’t have nutrients stored in your fat cells?
What happens if you have toxic waste stored in your fat cells?
Having a source of nourishment for energy is the biggest hurdle to overcome when you first begin fasting…
When I started fasting, my fat metabolism was bad, meaning that I had a hard time burning fat as a source of fuel… If I tried to put my body into a state of ketosis I found that there were little if any stored nutrients in there…
I had so much toxic waste stored in my fat cells that putting my body into a state of ketosis meant that my body was just releasing too many toxins and not getting enough nutrients to produce energy…
Ideally when you fast what happens is that your body taps into good healthy fat stored in your fat cells and uses that to nourish itself and produce energy…
… but in my case, when I started to fast my fat cells would release too much toxic waste as opposed to good healthy fat… that toxic waste would drain my energy which was already low…
The good thing about fasting when you have too much toxic waste in your fat cells is that you are getting rid of those toxins and making room for nutrients… the bad thing about fasting if you have too much toxic waste in your fat cells is that it will drain your energy as your body fights to flush out that toxic waste…
After all, the reason why your body stored toxins in your fat cells was to protect itself from the toxins… to get the toxins out, you have to expose yourself to them… this is why, phase two of the Beer Diet Project journey is a series of progressions where you let a little bit of toxins out at a time to avoid overwhelming your body with too many toxins… the more toxins you get rid of, the easier fasting will become…
When you gain weight, you are not producing more fat cells… rather, your fat cells are storing more toxins so they grow in size…
The more toxins you get rid of, the cleaner your body will be… the cleaner your body gets, the leaner it will be…

A clean body means that there are no toxins stored in the fat cells… therefore fat cells shrink down to their normal size…
Having too many toxins in your fat cells means that you won’t be able to burn fat as a source of energy… that’s why, the hardest thing when you first start fasting is to make sure you have a source of nourishment for energy…
That’s why I came up with this idea of nourished fasting… nourished fasting was a way for me to give my body nutrients without breaking my fast…
To do so, I started to drink nourishing liquids that require no digestion…
The three types of liquids I use for nourished fasting are…
#1 Green juice
To understand why these liquids, you have to understand the difference between fasting and a keto diet…
A keto diet is supposed to put you into a state of ketosis, but it requires digestion… it requires you to digest fat…
Fasting puts you into ketosis, but without digestion…
That’s the biggest difference…
The goal here isn’t so much to train your body to burn fat as a source of fuel… that’s what phase one of the Beer Diet Project journey does for you…
Phase two is about training your body to enter ketosis for the purpose of cleaning its fat cells…
The progression starts you off with nourished fasting, and the goal is to get your body cleaned up to the point where you don’t need nourished fasting and can do advanced water fasting…
Here’s how nourished fasting works…
First understand the mechanics of entering into the fasted state…
The best way to put your body into a fasted state is overnight…
You need roughly 12 hours without digesting carbohydrates before your body begins to enter ketosis…
When your metabolism relies on carbohydrates as a source of fuel, you only have about 3-4 hours before you deplete your energy and enter “starvation” mode… that’s the transition period when your body is wondering if you are going to feed it more carbs or if it should start tapping into its fat cells… you don’t want to be awake during this transition period…
That’s why the best way to go about it is to eat your last meal about 3-4 hours before bed time… if your last meal is at 7 pm, then your body will begin entering the fasted state right around 7 am… those 12 hours don’t count as fasting… that’s just the transition period…
Your fasting hours should be counted after the transition period…
If you eat your first meal at 8am, then you’ve fasted for one hour…
If you eat your first meal at 9am, then you’ve fasted for two hours…
… and so on…
The way nourished fasting works is that at 7am, rather than eating breakfast, you drink a nourishing liquid that doesn’t kick you out of the fasted state… this will get rid of hunger cravings and help your body flush out toxins…
Think of it like training wheels to push your fasting period progressively over time…
You can start by doing 1 hour of fasting for a full week… during that week work on pushing the time you drink a nourishing liquid further into the hour… that means that on day one, maybe you drink it right at 7 am… then the following day you wait 10 minutes… day three you drink your nourishing liquid at 7:20am… the next day you wait half an hour… and so on…
The following week, you bump your routine to do 2 hours of fasting and follow a similar approach… you start drinking your nourishing liquid at 8am… the next day you wait an extra 10 minutes… day three you are drinking a nourishing liquid at 8:20am…
That slow progression will train your body to get nutrients from fat cells… the nourishing liquid is just helping you increase the amount of time you expose your body to toxins in the initial stages of cleaning up…
These are just parameters based on experience…
You can probably go much faster than this… is it bad? I wouldn’t say it’s bad to go faster, rather than unpleasant… and by unpleasant, I mean that if you do go too fast and try to flush out too many toxins at once, you can end up with stones…
When cleaning brewing equipment, the worst thing that can happen is to get “beer stone”… those are calcium deposits that are likely to ruin your next batch of beer…
When cleaning up your body, the worst thing that can happen is that you get “stones”… gall stones, kidney stones… these are calcium deposits that can be painful and hard to get rid of…
So that’s my way of saying that slow is fast… it’s better to be consistent, than to rush and tell me that you started doing 6 hours of intermittent fasting but then you quit a couple weeks later…
I’d rather you do 1 hour, but if it becomes a daily habit and you stick with it for more than 6 months, then you’re going to have an easier time down the road…
