Think of your gut as your brewing equipment where you grow probiotics…
When brewing beer, the first thing I would have to do was to clean and sanitize my equipment…
If my brewing equipment was dirty or hadn’t been sanitized, it would increase the chances of bad bacteria growing…
If I ever had a spoiled batch of beer, I would have to dump everything out… drain my equipment… and then clean and sanitize…
When it comes to growing probiotics in my gut, I follow the same principles…
If you ever have bad bacteria in your gut (yeast overgrowth, parasites, mold, etc.) then it makes sense that you would have to dump everything out… you have to drain your equipment… you have to empty out your gut so that your can clean and sanitize it…
That’s the main reason why fasting makes sense to me…
To properly drain my gut, I will do at least a 5 day water only fast… but that is like doing 300 push ups… most people can’t do 300 push ups… some people can’t even do a single push up…
Fasting is no different… most people can’t fast for 5 days on water only… some people can’t fast a single hour…
This was me before I got into gut health… I would wake up “hangry”… I had to eat something first thing in the morning…
That’s because when your body starts to transition from the “fed” state to the “fasting” state, it begins to burn fat as a source of fuel…
If you have any issues burning fat as a source of fuel, then fasting will seem hard…
Fasting is your measuring stick for how good your metabolism is when it comes to burning fat as a source of fuel…
To get the benefits of fasting you must be able to burn fat as a source of fuel…
Can your body burn fat as a source of fuel?
If you get headaches and lose energy when fasting, then the answer is no… fasting is not good for you if you can’t burn fat as a source of fuel…
If you maintain your energy levels and feel good when fasting, then that means that your body is able to burn fat as a source of fuel and can go without food for prolonged periods of time… at that point then fasting is good for you because you are allowing your body to clean itself out…
Being able to fast isn’t something genetic… being able to fast is something you train for…
Health is a skill…
Fasting is part of your training…
This is the main reason why intermittent fasting is one of the most important tools I use in my diet… not only does it help me clean my gut, it trains my body to burn fat as a source of fuel…
So what exactly is fasting?
Some people think of fasting as “starving yourself”… but that’s not what it means to fast…
You can think of fasting as practicing “abstinence”…
What happens when you abstain from eating food is that your digestive system gets a break from having to break down food…
When your body goes roughly 12 hours without digesting carbohydrates it turns on its fat burning system…
… but what if you can’t burn fat as a source of fuel?
This is where a divide happens…
If your body is not able to burn fat as a source of fuel, then fasting will not be good for you because you won’t have a source of energy… you will indeed be starving yourself not because you can’t fast, but because your body hasn’t trained to burn fat as a source of fuel…
One reason why people lose the ability to burn fat as a source of fuel is because their fat cells are full of toxins…
One key thing to note is that the amount of fat cells you have is fixed… when you gain weight, you don’t get more fat cells… instead the fat cells that you currently have store toxins and get bigger…
The fat cells of your body are designed to store good fat so that it can burn it as a source of fuel… if instead it gets filled up with toxins, then it won’t have good fat to burn which means it will rely on carbohydrates as a source of fuel…
When you start fasting, your body opens up fat cells… if it draws out toxins instead of good healthy fat, fasting will make you feel miserable… you’ll be exposing your body to toxins which will drain your energy, and could make you feel nauseous…
If you have mostly good healthy fat stored in your fat cells, then fasting will make you feel good because it will be accessing clean healthy fat from its fat cells as opposed to toxins… your body will burn that fat as a source of fuel, so you will maintain your energy levels and feel good as it cleanses itself…
That’s why before you start fasting, you should be eating healthy fat and improve fat digestion so that you have energy when you start fasting…
Knowing this, you should know the 2 most important tools I use when fasting…
#1 Clean water
#2 Activated coconut charcoal
When people ask me “what’s the best drinking water?”… then answer depends on context…
To hydrate I talk about clean mineralized water like spring water… but when it comes to fasting and detoxing, the best water to use is clean distilled water… no minerals…
Remember, cleaning water is not the same as hydrating water… distilled water (no minerals) is better for cleaning… mineralized water is for hydrating…
This is something else I learned from brewing beer…
If you go to any good microbrewery, you’ll see they have water equipment where they mineralize water, adjust pH, etc., to make their brewing water…
… but when it comes to cleaning water, breweries will use distilled or RO water because when there’s nothing dissolved into water. Distilled water prevents mineral deposits and makes water more likely to absorb and clean…
When you start fasting, your body will begin to rid itself of toxins stored in its fat cells… clean water is what you’ll use to absorb those toxins and flush them out of the body…
The purpose of drinking clean water is the opposite of drinking water for hydration purposes. For hydration, you want your body to absorb water… but when it comes to detoxing, you want water to absorb toxins and for your body to flush out that dirty water…
That’s the key lesson I want you to get out of this as you prepare to train your body to fast…
Activated coconut charcoal is a tool I use because it acts as a filter… it will absorb toxins and help your body flush them out of the body…
In order to train the skills I’ll be laying out during phase two of the Beer Diet Project journey, you should have a clean source of water like distilled water or reverse osmosis… and have activated coconut charcoal on hand…
It’s better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it…

Phase two of the Beer Diet Project journey is training to do a 5 day fast because that’s going to be a requirement to be able to do the microbiome optimization steps in phase three…
If you’ve never fasted, or if fasting scares you, don’t worry… I’m designing this in a way that it will seem effortless… you are going to follow progressions so that you only start fasting a little bit a time and train to increase your fasting time… at first it may seem hard, but as you go through the progressions you’ll find that fasting will actually make you feel better and give you more energy…
If you are feeling hungry, nauseous, get headaches or anything like that, then you’re not doing it right or going to fast… don’t rush this process…
If you feel more energy, more focus, better mood, then you are following this at the right pace…
To complete this step, please comment below to acknowledge that you have the 2 main tools needed to properly detox during this phase… clean water & activated coconut charcoal…
